oops I broke a hose

Same old 83 Merc headache. I took the lower unit off to chang the impeller and when i took it apart the front hose near the shifter spline came apart. It is clogged at the top end. What does this hose do, is it important, where does it go from there? Will I be able to get to the end where it dislodged. I think it is in the middle of the shaft housing.

marcus,<br /><br />I'm NOT a Merc. expert, but that hose is there for a reason. I SUSPECT it may be a water tube.<br /><br />If it is broken in the middle of the exhaust housing you MAY be looking at removing the powerhead to replace it.<br /><br />I KNOW that IS NOT what you wanted to hear.

Is it a 1/4" black tubing ?? It would go to your speedo if you have one.

Yes it is a 1/4" black hose, but no speedo!

IF I FOLLOWED YOU RIGHT THE HOSE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT IS FOR THE SPEEDOMETER PICK UP .IT IS THE ONLY HOSE I HAVE EVER SEEN ON A LOWER UNIT OF ANYU KIND .UNLESS IT HAD A LOW WATER PICK UP,AND FROM WHAT YOU DESCRIBED OF WHERE IT WAS IT WOULD NOT BE FOR ANYTHING BUT THE SPEEDO .IF YOU LEAVE IT LOOSE THE ONLY THING IT WILL HURT IS YOUR SPEEDO WON'T WORK.IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A SPEEDO THEN YOU HAVE NO PROBLEM .OF COURSE IF YOU DID HAVE A SPEEDO AND THAT HOSE WAS ALREADY CLOGGED IT DID NOT WORK ANY WAY. GOOD LUCK.

marcus32:<br /><br />You might not have a speedo, but the motor was designed to plug a speedo into that hose, that way you don't have to mount a speedo pickup off the transom.<br /><br />Craig

I have an 1979 80 hp merc, I droped my lower unit and ran into the same problem. I went crazy trying to find out where it went to. so I left it hanging, never thinking about the speedometer! I ran it all last season no problems overheating. I even looked in my manual nothing about that hose.
