Early on in my bayliner redeck project, I was removing the passenger lounge seats using a rotozip wheel to cut the seats out- I made about a 6 inch cut through the hull- straightline. Now that I have removed all the decking- I am now looking to repair the cut-It is just below the waterline about midship and runs perpindicular to the centerline of the boat-I have a few questions-1. Do I need to stopdrill holes at either end of the cut to prevent it from spreading prior to repairing it? 2. I want to repair it from inside out and plan on using a dremel with a funnel stone to bevel out the cut to accept epoxy better. I want to use a acrylic plastic sheet or waxpaper as a backer- apply my gelcoat -then fill it with peanut butter- or cordasil mixed epoxy, applying the cloth, roving and mat in 1/2 inch wider intervals finishing it out by feathering it by lightly sanding it to blend with the hull, I am concerned that the epoxy will not bond with the gelcoat. Am I on the right track here? I know I will need to wetsand and rub the gelcoat in once it dries, my concern being that the gelcoat will bond with the epoxy-am I overthinking this?

OMG you did what?????

Well, let me relieve your embarrassment ......... it happens allot to many of the people in the restoration section. You are now on common ground! :)

The cut needs to be beveled out and repaired from both sides.

You have the method down pat...... just make sure you use polyester fiberglass on the exterior so the gel coat repair will work. The gelcoat will not stick to epoxy ;)

So layer up the outside and fair with fiberglass and you can use epoxy on the inside.

You do have it down. Gel coat will stick to epoxy repairs but follow the manufacturers guide. You can use polyester and it will be fine. Epoxy would be stronger of course, but it will be strong enough either way.

Thanks for the prompt response...I really had not planned on doing an outside repair. i was going to do the repair on the inside, with a backer on the outside- do I need to grind some of the exterior gelcoat off and use poly on the outside, then move to the inside- it is such a small cut- the width of a rotozip blade and only about 6 inches long. I hate to take off the gelcoat and repair from both sides-My idea was to bevel it from the inside- gelcoat-then glass from inside- and buff it out on the outside. and... Do I need to stop drill the cut in your opinion?
