Ok I have a 79 75 hp Chrysler Model 757H9E. I was changing the lower unit oil and realized I took out the screw that I've read numerous times not to take out. Go figure! Anyway I only have neutral and reverse, fwd will only grind and not engage. I've tried to line it up but not getting anywhere. Can some one tell me the secret to getting it back were it belongs? Does it need to be in neutral, fwd or rev? It was in neutral when I took it out. I can get it in so forward seems to work ok and then reverse you have to push up on the linkage at the cotter pin to get it to engage or I get rev to work and then forward won't engage unless you push down at the cotter pin. Can't seem to find the middle ground. Thanks I luv iBoats, I've learned a lot since getting my 85 Astroglass 154V with this motor. Just need to get this done and I think I have it licked. Seems every time I go to the water it's something else.

Drop the lower.
Remove the pump.
Then remove the shift rod cover.
While your there?? replace the shift rod seal/bushing.
Then reinstall the shifter lever and then reassemble.
You WILL need to pressure test it when your done.
Or it can suck all kinds of water in.

Thanks, i figured that was what i had to do, wanted to avoid that if at all possible. It's time to change the water pump anyway, so i will get all the parts, gaskets, and seals to do it right. At least I'll know it's all ready to for next year. I've replaceed the head gasket, plugs, starter, starter solenoid and now will do all this to the lower unit.

Ok, it doesn't work in the water. Still won't shift into forward. I tried to push it into forward at the lower connecting rod but it won't engage. I know the screw is in the right place after tearing it down. Any thoughts?

Re: Oops wrong screw, LU shift pin screw

Adjusting/Centering the shift linkage coupler could be the problem it has the coupler that has to be started centered as the Chrysler 35 ? 55hp. If this is the case, it might have been the initial case (after the screw was replaced) since you could manipulate and get all gears.

Attached was my 1985 centering ref marks. For me, pulling the cotter pin has been the simpler process vs centering the coupler (since I knew it was centered).

He was changing the oil and removed the wrong screw.
There wasn't a problem.
If it worked before? Then it's not together right.
You need to take it apart and align the coupler.
You didn't remove or dismantle the shaft assembly?

Re: Oops wrong screw, LU shift pin screw

No I didn't take the shaft assembly apart. Today I adjusted the LU shift rod, I lost reverse then got it back. I can get I to engage in forward when not in the water. It seems to not push the rod all the way down so I adjusted it up and that's when I lost reverse so I went back down with the rod and got reverse back but still no forward. I haven't adjusted the upper shift rod since it worked before I removed the screw. Any idea what I need to do to fix this? Should it be in neutral, forward or reverse? Thanks.

Re: Oops wrong screw, LU shift pin screw

Did you take any pics to verify you got the pivot screw correctly aligned in the lower unit (when you opened the L/U to realign the accidental removed screw)? I feel there are some miscommunications on this matter. Such as, if the pivot screw is in correct, the shift rod moved up or down should give you R/F and N in between.

You didn't unscrew the shift rod while it was out?

Re: Oops wrong screw, LU shift pin screw

No pictures but will take some when i take it apart again. When i had it apart the bracket at the bottom of the shift rod sits on a rod that moves the clutch, the rod is screwed into that and there is a hole for the screw (the one i took out when changing the oil). Diagram.jpg 23, 26, and 30 in the diagram. In the diagram does the screw go in the hole where the line showing where the part goes? I can get it into reverse, forward and neutral with my hand pushing the rod up or down. I can get reverse when everything is connected with the controls, i have neutral and i can't get forward when running in the water. It's not pushing the L/U shift rod far enough down to engage. I did have it working out of the water till I started adjusting and as of yesterday i've not been able to get it to engage forward with the controls. When running in the water i can't push it down into forward. I screwed the rod up trying to get it to push it down far enough to engage with no luck, i ended up going to far and couldn't get reverse so i backed off a few turns to get reverse working again. I will take a picture of it apart tonight and a video of me moving the rod up and down. If the picture is to small here is the link to the parts page: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...4/24.png&inbr=1795&bnbr=80&bdesc=GEAR+HOUSING

Thanks. I think I see my problem, i didn't find the brass part in your pictures, will take L/U off this weekend and turn upside down and get that out and use your suggestion, seems it works for others.
