MY 1962 EVINRUDE 40HP MOTOR IS LEAKING OIL FROM THE LOWER UNIT. I LOOKED TO SEE WHERE THE OIL IS COMING FROM AND FOUND SEVERAL SOURCES. FIRST IT SEEMS TO BE FROM LITTLE ROUND HOLES ON UNIT. SECOND I NOTICE A BIG OPENING BENEATH THE PROP. IS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE A COVER THERE.

Re: OOZING OIL

Hi jorge<br /> The oil coming from those little holes could be normal. Unburnt engine oil excapes out the exhaust. The leg of your motor, besides holding your lower unit on, is basicly an exhust pipe. The little holes are to drain water, to help prevent freezing. Now you may have a leek in the sealed portion (the lower unit). To check remove the vent and fill plugs, and drain your L\u. Look for water in the oil, it will look like a milk shake. If your oil looks ok your good to go. Usually leeking gear oil will be clean oil. Let us know what you find.

Re: OOZING OIL

jorge -- I'm curious about the big opening "below the prop." Do you mean the opening just above the prop? That would be where the exhaust exits --and is often a source for some black oily residue (unburned fuel, carbon from the exhaust -- nothing to worry about). As is pointed out in the prior post, the dirty stuff leaking out is not a problem. If you check the oil in the lower unit, you will note the color. If you see that coming out somewhere, you will need to correct the leak.
