Re: Operating Info on Chrysler 105 HP
You probably have the old style white control box, but the red cables are replacements. The original were black. Prior to starting for the firse time, pump the bulb on the fuel line until it is firm. this fills the carbs.
To start the engine for the first time (cold Start) you first put the control lever straight up into neutral position. Next, pull out the silver button. This dis-engages the shift mechanism. Next push the control lever as far forward as it will go. This is start/fast idle position. Push in The ignition key while turning clockwise to the start position. This chokes the engine while cranking. When the engine fires, release the key; it will return to the run position. let the engine run in fast idle for a few seconds or so then return the control lever to neutral position. If the engine stalls, restart it and let it warm up a little longer before putting control in neutral position.
Once the engine is warm and idling, push in the silver button. Now, when you are ready to go, push the control lever quickly either forward or backward about 6 inches. This will put the engine into its respective gear. You must do this quickly to avoid wearing the dog clutch. Pushing further on the control lever will increase throttle.
Use 1 pint TCW 3 oil per 6 gallons of gasoline.
Chrysler made this engine for many years. Depending on year: If your engine has Magna Power ignition, use Champion L20V plugs or equivalent. If you have points and coil ignition try Champion L4J or equivalent Autolite M42K or M42FF.
Also: before running the engine, you should check the lower unit oil to be sure it is full and it is not water contaminated (milky). Lower unit oil is extreme pressure marine EP 80-90. You can find it almost anywhere--ie.Wal-Mart. Also a good idea to drop the lower unit and replace the water pump impeller-you really don't know the history of the engine and this can avoid problems. Another thing to check would be to remove the bottom bolt on the carbs and take off the bowl. If the bowl is clean, you are probably ok. If it is gummed up or has varnish deposits, remove the carbs and clean them. Buy a fuel pump diaphragm and install it. The old one is likely to be hard and brittle causing fuel delivery problems. Water pump impeller--around 20 bucks, fuel pump diaphragm--around 3. If you cannot find the parts, try franzmarine at The Chrysler Crew.
Try to get a Clymers manual: It gives detailed instructions on maintenance and trouble-shooting.
