I was wondering what is the operating RPM range for a 1996 Johnson 90 and where the peak HP should be? Presently I have a 21" pitch prop and I get about 4500 RPMs when trimmed up with the boat minimum loaded, I think this is about 500 rpm too low. Any comments?

TIA

Everything I have seen and read says 5000-5500 is WOT RPM.

For maximum engine life, fuel economy and performance top RPM's should be at 5800 with an average load with your motor.

Good luck!

At least 1000 RPM too low. Probably a 15" pitch will get it close to right.

You can also play with your X dimension to gain RPM. In doing so you may also improve holeshot and top speed.

Before you do anything, look at the back of the tach and make sure it's set on position 6.....not 4.

Good luck!
