This one will be a personal motor on a cedar strip. Doing a complete restoration, down to every last bolt. Completely torn down right now, soda blasting and full paint.

Pulled the powerhead apart, walls were pretty good for a 57, light rust, rings were all stuck. Piston does have some light scoring on it, may need replacing, just wanted to hone and re ring.

Doesn't look like much in the rubbermaid bin, but give me a month ;)

Wrong, it is a beauty! The 1957 Golden Javelin has always been No.1 on my "To have and hold" list. Good luck!

Re: Operation Javelin Restoration

Well things are slower than I thought, but moving along.

Am ready to put my RJE19 powerhead back together after soda blasting, acid wash and honing. Turned out pretty good. Polished the pistons like new. Was told by an old rebuilder that he puts ATF on the pistons and cylinder walls during rebuild, since it burns off quicker than the 2 stroke oil that I was planning on using. I know not to use synthetic oil for this, but had never heard of using ATF? What do you guys think. Still have to clean the journals with the emory and polish the bearings, but getting there. Hopefully I can have her running by early summer.

Just put a high quality 2- stroke (TCW-3) on the rings/pistons.

ATF has no business in an engine unless you're tying to Band Aid something.

Nice, can't wait to see more pic's.

Nice job on the block. It looks like brand new. I'm in the process of buttoning up the powerhead on my old HD-20 Johnson, myself. :)

I had never heard of ATF either. His reasoning was that it burned off quicker, and would not foul the plugs. Not really my main concern. ;)

Block and pistons did turn out nice. So did the rest of the parts, here are some pics of them all blasted. Will start assembling tonight so I can paint.

Chris, did you do the soda blasting? BTDT with my RDS-21. My wife thought I had gone totally nuts with the crankshaft between my legs and polishing it with emerycloth. It started and ran on the first crank. Looking forward to seeing your completed project with that classic motor.

Re: Operation Javelin Restoration

I have someone that blasts for me. Would love to eventually get the attachment for the sand blasting cabinet, but for now contract it out. The guy is pretty cheap actually, if I bring in a big rubbermaid bin FULL of parts, cowl, gearcase, etc, it runs me about $100. Much better than 2 weeks of sanding in my opinion. ;)

Maybe I should get my boys sanding as one of their chores, hmmmm

Re: Operation Javelin Restoration

How far did you go with your crank? I think all that Ill need is to polish the journals, replace the seals. My roller bearings and such looked good, so just polished and cleaned them.

Those doggon rollers will outlast the rest of the motor. :D:D I would consider replacing the wrist pin sets though. I picked up a 57 Johnson 35 one time that had a batch of those get loose in the crankcase. You wanna talk about a mess. Those damned things even made it into the combustion chambers and destroyed the pistons, cylinders and cylinder head.

My motor was siezed when I got it. PO said it just quit in the middle of the lake. Tore it down and found bad bearings on one connecting rod but replaced both of them. I was lucky because the crankshaft journals were only scuffed so I just polished them up and re-assembled with new seals and gaskets. Mine was a great runner for many years. Like you, I have the sand blaster but wish I had the soda blasting option also. Good luck!
