In the Army we called it operator headspace and I may well be guilty but I don't wanna be, I justbought a 1983 15hp Evinrude outboard that has several issues with it or it may be operator headspace but to get orientated I figgured I'd ask you all for your point of view, This engine seems to want to run right but leaves me with the impression it hasn't been running much in a while and needs all things checked out and lubricated Where can I get a service manual for it and what should I look for gang how do you suggest I get this right the first time, Advice is what I need here, I enjoy tinkering with stuff so if you would gentlemen point me in the right direction with the right sequence and help me stay on course will ya! Thank You Ever so much for the wonderfull fourm you all have created here, Sincerely Danny.

Re: Operator Problems

what are some of the "issues" its causing you?

I have the exact same motor, and its great sometimes, then sometime it acts up and wont start, or staying running or re-start...

I checked the coils, spark plugs, etc...

I did some reading on here and it seems some people have had luck rebuilding the fuel pump.

I have a rebuild kit on order. They are cheap, so even if its not the issue atleast you know its now new, and gives you something to tinker with.

I got this website from the guys on here :

http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/OMC/OMC info.htm

more info then you will need there

Re: Operator Problems

Great motors, I have an 82. I buy most of my manuals off ebay. Make certain you get an OMC service manual. Doesn't much matter if it is Johnson or Evinrude as they are the same. Don't buy a digital one as I have been very disappointed with them. If you like to tinker you will enjoy getting your motor tuned and ready to hit the water. You will need to do all the basic stuff as was recommended in the Top Secret File. Best of luck and don't be afraid to ask. Rick.

Re: Operator Problems

Unknown motor- check compression first thing, is it worth fixing, while they are out inspect plugs.
Try and fire it up, will it start 1st, 2nd, 3rd pull? Check telltail for water, check block for temp, 130-140 degrees.

Once it passes, lower unit oil, water pump-replace it.

Will it idle? might need a carb clean/kit
