Hello, does anyone have an opinion on a 1984 Searay 28' boat that has twin motors and outdrives. I believe it's a SRV270.
Seller received boat from a friend and knows very little about it. I haven't seen boat in person yet but wanted some research first. Sellers says it has 350 Chevy engines installed but not knowing condition of motors. Outdrives intact but only know they say Mercruiser on it. Someone else mentioned that in 84 they used TR Outdrives which are impossible to find anymore since Mercruiser quit making these outdrives many years ago so parts don't exist. Any opinions. Thanks,
Deltarat

30 year old boat . . . so it is the actual condition that matters. It sort of depends on your experience and knowledge level in working on boats. I assume that it will need some upkeep, based on the age. You should probably go see it and post up some pictures.

Very knowledgeable around boats. Have way too many boats now: Basstracker, Jetboat, 4 jetskiis, 42' Gibson at my dock on Bethel Island. i'm just not familiar with Searays with twin outdrives. Before I drive 80 miles to where this boat is at; i wanted someone who has had one of these boats and knows the Pro's or Con's. On line from Searay.com SUCKS for info. Doesn't show any specs on this year model boat just a sales picture. Thanks

Just remember its only a paperweight. What makes a boat a boat is the paper work stating its a boat and that its your boat. No title no boat. As for the boat its self its always about ondition at that age. A good deal can become an endless money pit if not in as good of condition as you thought when you bought it.

I doubt that a 350 had TR outdrives. It's not impossible, but I'm sure they are just Alpha I's.

Sounds like an expensive enterprise even at $1.00. Best way to handle it~~~ have it surveyed and a mechanic look at it. Sounds like Sgt Schultz "I know nothing~~~ NOTHING!" and that is not a good sign

Re: Opinion 1984 Searay 28'

Thanks for the reply. My reasoning for the outdrive worry is that my 1988 42' Gibson Flybridge houseboat came with the 330 engines with Mercruiser TR2 outdives. And when they went bad with age (Alm case-pin holes:eek:il leaking drips); none could be found anywhere. I finally found another boat that was being scrapped out and bought their outdrives which magically were never used and in perfect condition. The boat was a theft and owner sold it to the insurance co which couldn't sell due to sinking. Now, I sold my houseboat to a good friend and am looking for another project. Found this 270 28' Sundancer but seller thought it had TR drives. Don't want that problem ever again. Are Alpha 1 drives readily available? Thanks

27', 10' beam, could have TR outdrives. Nice layout but check stringers and transom (like and boat of that vintage with stern drives).

Most of the TR drives were mated to Big Blocks. Beam/Length of boat have little to do with it.

Alpha drives are the most common drives.
on another thread you stated the boat was only $1,800.
I would imagine at that price the boat is beyond any worth.

A nice condition 28ft SeaRay with 260 Mercruisers with Alpha drives would be worth over $10,000.
A Profesional Marine survey could prevent you buying a rotten mess.

I'm amazed at the various prices on these SRV 270 boats throught S. Calif and Vegas. Some guys feel their 1988 boat is worth big bucks with similiar motor and outdrive issues. I have found 3 boats within my area on Craigslist.org that range from 1984 w/ trailer for $2700; 1988 with trailer and bad motors/outdrives for $4000; 1992 with trailer similar engine problems for $4300 and boats in the water in Lake Mead, Nevada from $12000 and up with outdrive problems. Plus at Boattraders they list 132 of these boats for sale all over the U.S. at real crazy prices. I'm bored and retired and looking for a fun project. However, can't justify putting big bucks in a boat that is already 30 years old, etc. I guess i've answered my own question. thanks, Bob
