This is my first restore of a boat. The boat was free so i have nothing to lose but time but it does look cool when you imagine what it can be. the question how would replace the transom?
would you put the plywood in first then reskin the back and tie it in?
Any suggestions would be helpful thanks in advance. I have already removed cap on boat and sanded for painting and have started stockpiling supplies to replace flooring and stringers :D

If you want to preserve the factory look of the stern ,work this from the inside.
Since you already have the cap off, laminate layers of glass across the entire
transom behind the existing structure. Lap the glass around to the topsides and
bilge. If you can do this with the pointing straight up and the transom level to
the ground life will be easier.
Temporarily attach a piece of plywood across that unfortunate gap in the
transom. Use mold release wax or wax paper or plastic sheeting to stop the
resin from adhering to the ply.
Once you have a nice foundation of glass you can layer in some marine ply
to build out to the proper thickness.
I know this is kinda light on specifics but this forum is full of details on
surface prep, glass cloth, resin, Marine ply, laminating and transom repair.
Good luck GH

Yep the cap must be removed at this point, no biggie.
Gut the old transom out.

Block the cut out (screwed) with ply faced with waxed formica ( I like kitchen countertop scrap) and lay the transom back up from inside with resin and glass overlap the glass right across the inside then just make a new plywood transom and install it same as we all do.
Remove the formica or ply from the outside and fair it all in.
