I am looking at a 1998 Four Winns 25' Vista and it has a VP 280HP, 5.7 SFI engine. Other engines I am seeing in boats in my short list have twin 4.6 Mercury's. Which would you suggest?

I read a tidbit that this VP engine may be an issue since it's a Ford engine that is no longer made and parts are tough to get. Is this true?

Also - any idea what the difference is between the SFI and GSI?

Thanks!

None of your post makes sense. There is no such thing as a SFI, The 5.7 is a Chevy engine, not Ford. Ford engines weren't used after 96.
There is also no such thing as a 4.6 Mercruiser.

Sorry Don - My mistake on the 4.6, the common twins I am looking at are 4.3 Mercruisers. Sorry. For the VP's I just pulled the text from their listing. I am guessing they have some bad info or a typo. Here is the text copied from the ad:

Engine Brand: Volvo Penta
Engine(s) Power: 280 HP
Engine Model: 5.7L SFI
Engine Type: Inboard

I would sure be asking for some verification.

In a nutshell, the 5.7 and the 4.3 are both Chevy engines, used in almost all boats with V6 or V8 engines.

The 280 HP Chevy 5.7 that Volvo Penta used in 1998 would almost have be a Vortec engine, with probably GM TBI injection and a GM digital ignition system. Mercruiser used the same thing in that time frame, I had one. "5.7LX EFI Gen +" is what Mercruiser called it and it was 280hp. Ran great.
Definately NOT a Ford engine. "SFI" sounds like it's some abbreviation for "Sequential Fuel Injection", but I haven't ever seen that abbreviation in marine engines. "Sequential" injection would imply it is a multi-port type, meaning it has an individual injector for each intake valve.
