I just realized I may have originally posted this in the wrong forum - should have been posted in this forum (non repair)- sorry)

1997-Mercury 4 Cylinder Tiller Steer Model C40ELHPTO

I'm considering purchasing this motor for a fishing boat, and if I'm going to do it need to pull the trigger in the next week and I need some help. This motor appears to be in excellent condition cosmetically. But I'm more concerned with the mechanical side.

Based on the model number above I believe this is a 1997 motor?? This is a 2 stroke / 4 cylinder motor.

If anyone (particularly a mechanic has any experience with this motor I would really appreciate knowing if this has a reputation for being a good motor and any known the pros and cons (things to look out for on this motor). The shift is in the handle and I like that feature. The compression is good and it spits a real solid stream of water.

I didn't know Merc made a 4 Cylinder back then. Should it run smooth at trolling speed? Also if I decided to put a power trim on it where would I look into that and how much would I expect to spend.

Any and all feedback good or bad would be greatly appreciated.

I really appreciate any and all feedback provided., Thanks

Dan

so is that a 40 hp tiller steer?

Look inside to see how many cylinders it has.

aftermarket (and replacement) PTT can be very expensive. Price it now before you buy.

do you plan to hook up controls to it, too?

Yes, Tiller steer. it is a 4 cylinder, and I have no immediate plans to hook controls to it. Will be using it as tiller or a 16 foot fishing boat.

What is PTT??

Don't really know much in detail on the Merc.
I do believe that being a 4 cylinder it is likely slightly more complicated than say a 2 cylinder 40 Evinrude or Johnson
and The 2 cylinder may be a little lighter.

C40ELHPTO

40 hp
E electric start
L long shaft (20" )
H hand (tiller)
PT power trim
O Oil injected.

Looks like it already has power tilt and trim.

You really need to provide the serial number to confirm the model year.
