Opinion on Solas props

I have a 19' Bayliner Capri Bowrider with a 3.0L Merc I/O and an Alpha Drive. I currently have the standard 21p Black Max 3 bld alum prop. I'm looking for more out of the hole and not really concerned about top end speed. I'm considering a Solas HR Titan 4 bld SS 19p. Anyone have any opinion on these props, good or bad?

Read the post directly above this one. Similar question, and without some current performance information we can't help.

Re: Opinion on Solas props

The boat is parked for the winter and I don't have the specific performance details you need. I was just looking for general comparisons of this prop to those of other manufacturers. These are the lowest priced props I've seen of this size and pitch for my drive and I am trying to keep the cost down. Generally, you get what you pay for and I'm looking to find out if this is the case here. Am I sacraficing anything for price?

Id wait for Walleyehed, some of those props have lots of cup and while im no expert here the 3.0 on that big of boat might not work out that well......

Re: Opinion on Solas props

So many prop designs are available because one prop rarely works well for every boat/engine/load/speed combination. Since you really don't care about a couple of mph at the top end and are really looking for better hole shot an aluminum Solas or another Black Max will probably work nicely. But, don't buy anything until you know what the important numbers are. If the engine is already at the top of its maximum recommended wide open throttle rpm, dropping pitch may cause over reving but it would help hole shot. On the other hand, if the engine is lugging due to the current prop having too much pitch, the change you are suggesting may increase rpm and also help hole shot some -- but not as much as just a switch from the 21P 3 blade aluminum to a 19P 3 blade aluminum. Remember, you said you wanted to keep the cost down. Stainless does not keep the cost down. There is just too much to consider here without some numbers and it is equally difficult to talk in generalities without those numbers. What holds true in one scenario does not automatically apply in another. Stainless is tough and the blades flex less than aluminum but hit something and you risk more severe lower unit damage than you would with aluminum which bends and breaks with less chance of lower unit damage. There are folks here with extensive prop testing knowledge and I'm sure they will be along with more specific advice but I will bet they too will ask for more detail.

Re: Opinion on Solas props

I talked at some length with a mechanic at my local Bayline dealer about props and what I wanted from it. I would like to go with the stainless because of the strength and durability and the 4 bld because of the added performance and smoother operation. He told me going to a 19p 4bld would not affect my rpm enough to worry about but not to go below a 19p. He was refering strictly to OEM props from Mercury though and they are very cost prohibitive. I can deal with $300 for a Solas but not $500+ for an OEM. The cupping of the Solas adding bow lift was my biggest concern. This whole thing may just have to wait until I can get back in the water in the spring and get some numbers.

Re: Opinion on Solas props

Yes..it would be nice to have some numbers, but I can give some details about the Solas. Most Solas props are made from 24-10 SS unlike most other SS props of 15-5 SS. The 24-10 is much softer in comparison and provides "some" security if you're worried about hitting something.
The 4-bld Titan in a 19 will likely add just a bit more RPM than the 21 alum, so it is important you know where you are before going that route.
The Titan doesn't have the massive Rake that would cause problems with too much bow-lift, infact, it may be more of a stern-lifter.....compared to the 3-bld.
In all, the guys above have posted the importance of knowing where you are now before spending any money.

Thanks for all the replies, but I think I probably will wait unitl I can get back in the water and run some numbers. Then I'll come back and ask again.
