I am thinking..thinking about this boat/motor/trailer on ebay, at a price less than his opening bid.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...&item=4513251288&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT

I had a single cylinder sleeved on a 115 Evinrude because of a plugged jet years ago, but I have never heard of a block with all of the cylinders sleeved?? Plus, the seller states it has a broken rod now, and they "mic-ed" (measured) the bore and crank, and they are somehow OK??? I have never had a Mercury down, but it would be almost impossible to measure the crank without pulling the crankcase apart I would think. Plus, the last two outboard engines I saw with a "cracked rod" were a pile of scrap on the inside with a lot of broken and scared pieces. But, his 200hp is OK..how could that be? I would like to have a 21' low profile boat to redo for a fish and ski, but if this motor is toast..I will wait on the next one to float by.

Opinions????

Stop thinking about bidding on this package.

The whole description says, "Caveat Emptor!"

Just being on eBay is enough to say, "RISK", but this guy is describing actual miracles!.

Unlike their inlines, V-6 Mercs have cylinder heads that can be removed to get some idea as to the condition of the cylinder and piston. But you can only see the top of the piston and top half of the cylinder. The crank can't be mic'd without removing it. If those are current pics, somebody's not being honest.

Broken rod = damaged block and/or crank. I can't imagine any way around that. That block can be resleeved but I find it incomprehensible for anybody to replace all six. But if he was willing to pay, a shop could do the work.

1970s boat? I wouldn't touch it. Rot in the transom and/or stringers is all but guaranteed. $1650 starting bid is more than the boat's worth. Running it's worth between $2K and $3K. Without a running motor, under $1K.

In my experience, ebay boats = somebody getting screwed. Seen it happen alot and have worked on several. Hey, come to think of it I LIKE ebay boats. Keeps food on my table. ;)

Re: opinion on this outboard

Thanks for the input. I did not feel there was any way to check the crank and cylinder without tearing the engine down. I will give the seller credit on one aspect of his listing..he did disclose some of the damage to the engine.

I still like the boat, and will try to buy it and the trailer. I have replaced the structural parts (ie: stringers, transoms, and bulkheads) on several boats, and fully expect this one to need all. This would be my first overall gelcoat job if I can make a deal with him. I am looking forward to that job. If so, I will post photos of the process on the restro forum.

Happy holidays
