I recently purchased my first boat and has a 1988 150 Johnson on it.Longshaft.The BOATS Max. engine capacity is 150.Is this to much and what do i need to worry about with the long shaft? just shallow water or the planing of the boat also.To much motor or not/will it run deeper in the water due to the weight or are most motors the same weight range? Thanks John.

The motor is a long shaft to match the height of the transom has nothing directly to do with depth..Depth in the water depends on the hull design.
A boat with a broad relatively flat run aft will generally tend to be shallower than a Deep V design.A 150 is certainly not to much motor. How deep it runs will depend more on hull design than motor weight.Measure the depth at rest
will give you the idea.My guess is 18-20" would be the minimum,Could be as much as 30-36".

Thanks for the input/being that its winter now is killing me:(But tomorrow will be up in the 60`s so i will be doing a little more research on the transom and hull.Me personally i would prefer the Johnson over the Force.Guess i just have to keep doingsome homework on it.Thanks JOHN.i FORGOT TO POST THAT IT CAME WITH A 120 FORCE ALSO.

The person i bought itfrom said both motors do run and he took the Force off because he is not a fan of them.He never finished hooking up the Johnson because he is moving out of state. So i took his word for it /so all i can do is hope for the best.I do have all the receipts for the Johnson on all diff. repairs over the years. So all i can do is waite for warmer weather.Just want to be prepaired.

Force is a long time out of production. No question parts are dwindling.
Look up parts for both here at iboats. The Johnson has so many more available its laughable.

Boat manufacturers are required to post a maximum safe horsepower on the capacity label for boats under 20 feet. The formula used is fairly conservative so even if the max is 150 you're good. However many manufacturer's actually downrate, that is, post a max that is less than what the formula actually works out to. So again you're good.

A force engine is a pretty simple bare bones engine, not many bells and whistles. But as was said they are old and parts are getting hard to get. Many years back when Brunswick bought Bayliner and formed US Marine they also got Force along with the deal. Force was made by Bayliner. Brunswick also owns Mercury so the newer force engines were actually mercs under the hood. So depending on when it was made the Force may actually be a Merc.

Personally though I would go with the Johnson. Just my own personal preference.

Force was formerly Chrysler that was purchased by US Marine then US Marine was purchased by Brunswick who owns Mercury. Mercury worked on the electronics and added Merc. lower units but to my knowledge Mercury never labeled a Mercury with a Force label. The 120 Force is a decendant of the old 100/105/115/120/130/140 Chrysler. Although a '92 120 Force is better than the previously mentioned Chryslers, the '88 150 Johnson is a better choice. The performance difference (it the Johnson is healthy) will be enormous.
