I am taking a look at what appears to be a lightly used 18HP Nissan motor with a manufacture date of 1990. This is a short-shaft 2-stroke model. The price looks good at around $900.

Any opinions on this outboard? How does it do for fuel economy?

Thanks.

Tohatsu, who makes Nissan brand outboards, has an excellent reputation for building bulletproof engines, Jon.

It was probably an excellent engine when first sold. What it is now depends on what has happened to/with it in the last 15 years.

You should be able to get a ballpark figure on value from NADA guides.

Good luck. :)

900 is a bit steep. its a great motor, but not THAT great.

if all is good, id expect to see the price of 500-600

All true...I really loved that model and close to two gallons per hour at WOT.

Agreed- this is a very bullet proof motor. Just make sure that if it hasn't been used in a while that you make sure the carbs are clean and not gummed up and it has a good impeller in it. This a very easy motor to work on and it will last forever.

Ditto.

Parts and service CAN be an issue.
