My I/O has a soft spot in the transom (due to a loose bolt on the gimble ring) The damage is just local to the port side of the ring in an area about 6 inches square. The rest of the transom is sound. This "soft spot" is preventing the gimble ring from seating tight enough against the transom and causing a small leak. I don't want to pull the engine during the summer to make repairs. I have a wild-ass idea for a temporary repair and would like to here some opinions.
I plan to drill and tap into the fiberglass and install 2 or 3 zerk fittings (inside boat) and then fill a grease gun with resin and inject the resin into the soft area to fill the void. A poor man's ploy to deprive the rich and save my summer.
I tried this before on an outboard but did not inject it, instead I drilled deep holes from the top and used a transmission funnel to pour the resin. That was 5 years ago and it is still sound.

Re: opinions for soft transom fix

Thanks Bear, My main concern was injecting close to the gimble mount and if the stuff may ozze into the inside of the gimble. I am not doing this to add structual integrity (cured resin is like peanut brittle) all I am trying to accomplish is to force something solid between the inner and outer fiberglass skins. The transom is structually sound except in this one small area. This winter I will pull the engine and cut out a 2 foot square of skin and replace the plywood. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar situation and what they did to correct it
