opinions/input?

got a line on a late 70's or so merc 898 complete setup from inner transom to prop, everything in between. also complete 305 complete, all from same boat, looking at $550 for all. motor tired, outdrive mechanically fine, just needing cleanup paint. i don't know much about the 898 series, are they good? any thoughts?

If the motor is tired after 30 years, you can bet the drive is too. Engines usually outlast drives. There just isn't anything you can check without pulling the drive apart. Groove in shafts (makes new seals leak) hard facing worn on the gear surfaces. Things you just can't see.
