Just looking for suggestion on the best way to get maximum dollars on 2 engines i plan on parting out. For instance, should i try to sell a lower unit complete or break it down? My person thoughts on the lower units would be complete. if not, i think i would wind up with a pile of lower unit part that never get sold.

another good example would be the powerhead on the good motor. seel it as a powerhead or break it down and sell crank, block, ect.

Anyway, i have 2 complete motors and remote controls. One is prolly early to mid 70's merc 50 that actually runs but was taken off because we got tired of trying to keep it running. I took it to 2 or 3 people and it would run great for a trip or 2 then go back to running like crap.

second one is a 65 (i think its from the early 80s or late 70s) and it ran fine until it ran hot and siezed so the powerhead on it will be no good as it stands.

I just want some opinions on the best options of breaking up the parts.

I have some 40hp powerhead parts (crank, etc.), that I can't get a $5 offer for. On the other hand, a complete powerhead or gearcase costs a lot to ship.

place an add, see what any buyers may want, remove the parts as they get sold. ( jmo, but its alot easier to keep track of parts if they are left on the motor)

Personal experience, your results may vary:

Last year I sold a 65 HP - it had all the pieces except a couple of chewed up gears, but it was all torn apart (a LOT of assembly required). I posted it on CL - the whole load for $100. Somebody bought it within about 3 weeks.

Good pictures go a long way on CraigsList. Don't just post cell phone shots if you're really wanting to sell.

I have a large room in my shop full of motors (50 or 60) a friend disassembled thinking he could get more money for the parts individually.

That was about 6 years ago, he has a tough time even getting anybody to ask questions, let alone buying the parts.

I'm no expert in this area, but it seems to me that if you break the motors down to individual parts that you want to sell, you'd better be prepared to act like the parts dept. at your local dealer - keep an inventory, know the catalog names of all of the parts, have cross reference info. for the different model applications, etc., etc.

Maybe keep the major units intact (power head, lower unit, etc.) and either sell whole or break off a specific part if someone wants it.

all good advise. i prolly never sell any of it but just to keep my son off the xbox, i might break them down into the bigger chunks and run them on the free bulletin board here. if i ever sell anything, then i will split the money with him.

How about : Cowl, Power head, Middle section & Leg, complete assemblies, not spare parts.

Happy Boating
