Opinions on Carb

My QadraJet is in need of a rebuild. I have never rebuilt one before, but I have rebuilt ATV carbs and I feel I am capable of doing the job. BUT, I have found a reputable carb shop that will trade my old carb for a rebuilt one for $140. These are flow tested and come with a 6 month warranty and the company has been in business here for 40+ years. Despite what some think about q-jets, I believe they are great carbs when they are in good condition and adjusted right. On the other hand, I've "heard" several people say that it's really hard to ever get an old one to work like new unless you really know the ins and outs of a q-jet, as they are a bit complex. I just want to get some opinions from the iboats crew. Rebuild myself or trade her in? Also will I ever get rid of that notorious q-jet hesitation when I really goose it?

Rebuild it yourself. Its easy and cheap. The hesitation may be something other than the carb.

Yeah, it may be something else causing hesitation, but I figured the carb would be a good place to start. Haven't checked timing yet, but I will. I believe 8 deg before TDC is correct. The engine runs pretty darn good and smooth other than that hesitation. I was thinking it could the the accelerator pump, and the carb could sure use a good going through anyway. Q-jets are pretty notorious for having that hesitation aren't they?
