Opinions on how you would fiberglass this?

Hey all,

Looking for some opinions on how the iBoats community would glass this section of a repair/resto.

First I am going to secure the stringer in with PB and then thinking about tabbing it in with 1.5oz CSM.
One piece of CSM on each side on the radius of the PB fillet and then maybe one piece over the whole stringer from side to side. Also going to be coating the stringers in a layer of polyester resin.

After that dries - use a piece of 1708 over top of the whole stringer from side to side.

After that dries - put the decking lid on and coat it with a layer of resin (before the glass).

After the decking is on - use a huge piece (or broken down into smaller overlapping pieces) covering both the stringer and decking.

The only parts I am concerned about is the full wrap of the 1708 over the entire stringer and the 90 degree angle covering the stringer and the decking.

Let me know if that sounds like a good plan?

Thanks!

Nate you need a build thread! Instead of 1 per question.
have you read the stickies yet? A lot of your questions are answered in them.
looks like you’re making some progress though 👍
here is a picture of my stringers being glasses in

i would also recommend you follow through some similar builds to your project
mine is

“1974 Duo Vagabond stringers and transom”

not the best documented but should show you what I have gone through in the last year.

Well, I really want to get opinions on if my plan sounds legit...

Do I really need to start with the 1.5oz CSM for instance..or can I just use the 1708 all around instead.

*** Sand the edges to a round or slight bevel.

All the above like you said.
Oh yea get rid of that carpet stuff so you can tie in with the new glass on top of compartment lid.

Cool - thanks!

The decking already has a layer of CSM on the underside - you can kinda see the fuzzies in the picture.

I'll also sand the edge of the deck so it is not totally sharp...

The carpet will be removed as well - was just keeping it there until I was ready. Going to use the existing pieces as a template for when I cut new carpet to replace the old stuff.

As for the size of 1708 - I could put a huge piece down and wrap the whole thing... Is that normally how it is done?

Thanks!

@NatedoggAZ You can put a huge piece down if you think you can glass it in. I would recommend cutting the pieces you need in 1 ft section unless you are a glassing master. The way i did mines was i put the bed down for the stringers with the 1708 already cut. Once i place the stringer in the bedding i smooth out the thicken resin to the hull and up the stringer. then add the first layer of 1708. I went 4 inches up the stringer and 4 inches onto the hull. Then the second layer i went 6 inches up the stringer and 6 inches onto the hull overlapping them(Both sides). i then capped it with 1708 that was the hardest part getting it to stay down for me. next time i cap a stringer i will use csm and just pull pieces of csm apart and glass the top.

Great - thanks for the info! I was thinking on doing something like that as well...

I don't think it is imperative to cap the stringer in the 1708 in my circumstance. Especially since it is difficult to work with in bending it over things. I may not achieve the results I am looking for. I watched a video of a guy (the long haired guy - Andy I think his name is) capping a board in 1708. He did a good job - but that was in a controlled setting.. AND he is a pro.

I should be a be able to use a large piece and bend it down over the side (from decking over the edge covering the stringer) basically just a 45 degree bend...

Nate,
The guys are right. You need to keep to your original thread. Just saying.
