I'm going to look at a 1984 Johnson J50BELCM as a possible powerplant for a skiff. Owner claims powerhead to have been rebuilt by factory dealer 3 years ago with now about 50 hours run time since.

Questions:
Is this a good vintage & model?
Are controls easy to find? (I'll need top mount style)
What should I be looking for? I would normally check idle, throttle response, prop shaft runout, water flow, gear oil condition-anything else?
Any ideas on what I should offer?

Thanks, Bob

I don't know that particular motor, but I might be able to help you with the controls. There's a guy on eBay that always seems to be selling controls. I think he's an engine breaker, a boat junkyard or something. But, it seems like there are always controls on eBay, going for not too much money.

Failing that, contact Twin Cities Outboard at http://www.tcoutboard.com. They will certainly have several controls for that model on hand.

Thanks for the tips - owner indicates compression is 150 on both cylinders which I suppose I should verify.
