I saw an ad today stating the following:

$100
I have a 1960 out board motor that runs really well just put new plugs in it. comes with a 6 gallon gas tank the isnt the cheap plastic ones its a metal tank. the problem with the motor is its picky on when it wants to go into gear. i dont know if its adjustable or not but i no longer need the motor.

Any thoughts as to whether this is a "good" buy or not? I know nothing about this brand of motor, but I do like cheap stuff (even better if it works). I thought I read that parts supply is somewhat of an issue for these motors?

It's 53 years old.
No matter how cheap it's 53.
The parts are gonna be tough to find.
Not impossible but hard.
The lower unit shifting might be an easy fix?? Maybe not??
It's a gamble.
I'd buy it.
But I probably can fix it.

Thanks for the reply.
My biggest concern would be parts. I have worked on a couple of '55 johnson motors and resurrected them, but parts for them is a simple matter.

I'll probably end up buying it.... I'll give it until tomorrow, maybe. :)

Sounds more like a $35 motor to me.

$35, why's that? Is that how much I could get for the scrap metal?

1960 Chrysler 20Hp?????
Chrysler went in OB in 1965 when they bought OB out from WestBend.
It should be from 1965 and up.
Parts are still available. FranzMarine has it.
A well maintained OB will last really long, so if it is 30-40 years old does not matter. You can kill a brand new one in a couple of years if you do not take care of it.

The price is up to you and how well the engine look.

I was wondering the same thing about the year. I too noticed, or at least I could not find reference to a 60 Chrysler.

Still listed and I am almost ready to offer that $75.

Probably turn out to be a 60hp chrysler or something like that. we'll see....

Thanks!

At $75 or even $100 your not going to loose much.. There was nothing wrong with the old Westbend/ Chryslers. Getting parts or people to work on them can be a problem nowdays, but the same problem will be there with old Mercury's and you'll spend a lot more on a 20hp Merc of the same vintage.. If you can work on it yourself, it won't be a problem.

Thanks for the reply Matt.
True, the price is not too outrageous. Plus I'm sure I would to get to learn something new. Kind of like paying for a class or something (that's what I'll tell myself).

I'll see if I can get a hold of the guy and go from there...
