I have a 1988 100 hp carberated Mercury outboard that came off of a Searay Seville open bow. I have known this motor since it was brand new. I bought it from by brother-in-law. It has an oil injection system on it. I have seen threads on this forum that imply I ought to remove this oil injection system, plug it and run premix. What's the consensus on this opinion. I've never had a lick of trouble from this motor and I want to keep it that way, but premixing sure seems like a pain in the a$$. How do you get the mix right when gas tank is not completely empty. How do you make sure the oil is adequately mixed with gas before starting engine. etc.

Thanks for you help.
-Joe

"premixing sure seems like a pain in the a$$."

It is! In your case, knowing the engine history I would leave the injection system intact. In my experience, that injectios system has been very reliable. The ones that most people remove is from the V-6 Mercs. Of course this is just my opinion, I'm sure there are others out there!

Good Luck!

I have a 1988 100 h.p. Merc from a SeaRay Seville also. 16 years and counting with the oil injection. Why mess with a good thing?

If it ain't broke, don't mess with it....

However, premixing is not as much as a pain to me as it may be to others...

Simple math and an oil measuring funnel attached to a tube and you're set. 1 Pint to every six gallons of gas. Assuming you're filling up a tank that still has fuel in it, fill up the tank with straight unleaded, however much that is (lets say 10 gallons) divide that number by six..
10/6 = 1.67 pints of oil that you add to the tank.

Just run all of the old unleaded out first before you start using pre-mix fuel.

Thanks Guys,
I was sincerely hoping that that would be the answer I got.

Hey Sprinkler,
Is your motor still on your SeaRay? Stringers and deck rotted out on mine. Then my nephew put it up on some rocks and punched a couple of holes in the hull. It's now mounted on a 1998 Starcraft Fishmaster aluminum hull.

I never have any problems with pre-mixing. It is less effort than caring for your fishing rods or general boat/trailer maintainence. A bit of discipline is a good thing.
However.. Mercury make pretty good products, and also have audible alarms for when a problem arises. I would just keep a small 2-3 Gall reserve tank of fresh mixed 50:1 with a suitable connector, on board in case you ever have a failure.

Joe,

Yes, it's still on my Seville. I bought the boat from my Dad, who had it for the first 13 years. He took excellent care of it. People are really suprised when I tell them it's an 1988. SeaRay makes a quality boat.

I hope your nephew bought you a nice christmas gift this year. :D

As a side note I noticed that Mercury changed the recommended spark plug for this engine. Formerly, the plugs had no ground strap. Now they recommend ones with a ground strap, gapped to 0.040". Below is the response I received from NGK:

"Hello,

The BP8H-N-10 stock number 4838 is the recommended spark plug for your application. This is the superceded spark plug. Gap should be set at .040."

hello
the only problems we ever had as a dealer and a tech with those years of merc/mariner 3 and 4 cyl oil injected other than the tank fill caps leak is the vinyl lines. change them every 3 years. if they are hard as a rock they WILL fail. I always recommended a fuel pump overhaul and the oil lines and the fuel/oil mixing check valve every 3 years or so. water pump and t-stats every other year. check or change the gear case oil 2 times a year minimum.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks everyone! I'll keep the oil injector on.

Thanks Rodbolt. It looks like I have a couple of maintenance chores to do. No problem. I have a couple of questions for you, but I'll post a new thread for them.

Sprinkler,
That doesn't surprise me. Even in its wrecked state my Searay is beautiful. They certainly did make a good looking boat, with a lot of quality extras (hydrolic steering etc.). Just keep a lookout for rot in the floor. You might want to periodically check the stringers especially toward the rear on either side of the gas tank. They weren't completly glassed in that area, just epoxyed. If you've kept the boat indoors, especially during the winter this probably won't be a problem. Transom should never rot. it's completely glassed in.
If you happen to need any hardware for that boat, let me know. But it would need to be pretty quick as I'm getting ready to donate it to a charity. If I haven't already removed it, or it's not wrecked I'd be happy to send it to you for the cost of shipping.
Just curious, what color is your boat? Mine is red and white.

-Joe

Joe,

Mine is white with white/blue interior. Go ahead and give it to charity. I don't think I need anything. Thanks for the offer!!!

Joe, I am still using my 88 Seville. It also had the floor rot out - the real problem is that Sea Ray did not install a drain from the gas tank compartment.

Years of skiing and rain eventually let water in, and it sat there and stewed and stewed.

I was able to salvage it 10 years ago by cutting off the top inch of the stringers and laminating in a new piece. Same for a square foot of floor. And I added the drain!

No more problems so far, but I guess I should lift the panel and check again.
