I think the 35 will do the job, Daddy. It won't be a rocket but it will perform adequately.

I have a semi-V that looks to be a little bigger than your boat. It the front 1/4 has a fishing deck made of 3/4 plywood and also has a box bench in the back made of 3/4 plywood. I am guessing that my boat is a fair bit heavier than yours. Last year I had myself, my brother and my dad in the boat (all around 200 lbs) and my GPS said we were doing 15 mph with a 18 hp 1957 seahorse on the back.

So I am guessing that your 35 will do really well and you will probaby get it going pretty fast. With just myself in the boat I can get her up to 22 mph.

here is a link to my boat to compare sizes and weight

FYI my boat is now maroon and cream to match the motor.

How does your engine run? People laugh at me when I pull up to the ramp with such an old engine. I am the one laughing when I pull away from the dock since they are typically still pulling away on their 4 stroke. I have never had to pull more than twice to get it started other that the first time in the water each year.

Looking at the pics it's a bit tough to tell the shape of the bottom. It looks like a fairly pronounced V to me. That'll be great for rough water, but you'll have a lot of hull dragging you down. 35hp with 4 people seems a little on the small side with what I'm imagining the shape of the hull to be. If it's flatter than I'm thinking it may be fine.

You got any better pictures of the underside?

Man TD, that's a sweet looking Johnny-rude...don't see many with the original paint/decals that nice. It's worth every penny of that price...keep it and run it. If you decide to swap it off or sell it, let me know...I'll take any excuse to visit sunny Florida. Looks just like a 57-58 Johnny 18 hp I just restored and repainted.

I think it will make a good cruising boat. Remember the HP was rated at the head back then so I guess you can expect 30 at the prop. Nice project.

The 35 will be fine. I had a '59 14-foot LoneStar Mustang at one time and ran a '57 Lark 35. Was a very good combination...
