Hi, my uncle asked me to reassemble his 1970 110 (9.8) Merc for him... It had a broken lower gearcase, but I found another that looked the same... After getting all the gears back in, and the prop on, I couldn't get the lower unit on because the shift shaft didn't line up on top... After many swear words, I removed the carb and the top shift gear to get the unit on, but still couldn't get the top gear to line up.... After a few more vulgarities, I scrapped down the whole thing again, only to find that the donor gearcase was not the same inside... The shift actuator actually swings out in the opposite direction from the old one....I figured I could heat and twist the shift shaft to get the top gears to line up and just have rev and fwd backwards up on the shift lever.... I mentioned this to my uncle, and he said that rev and fwd were backwards on it since he had the motor, which led me to believe that the gearcase was changed previously.....so, I put all the gears back in again and I can get fwd and neutral but no reverse.... I'm thinking that either the slider isn't going far enough to engage the cogs in the reverse gear, or there is some other difference in the donor gearcase housing that would cause the reverse gear to not reach in far enough to mate with the pinion..... Maybe there is a difference in the prop shaft or gears, requiring you to have the gear set to match the particular gearcase.... This is a long shot, but I'm hoping that someone else has experienced this issue before and can give me some guidance.... Either way, I am totally out of swear words, and had to make up a few new ones last going off, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx
