I have a 2004 Optimax and it has been rock solid up until this season. It is using way more oil than usual and is not leaking anywhere. Really noticed the usage this past week while on vacation. It used a gallon of oil for 40 gallons of gas. Motor runs fine and does not seem to have any loss of power, maybe a couple mph at top end, but it is 11 years old. It does have some smoke and odor at idle that is noticeable, which it never had before. There is some blackening of the exhaust port as well. I have checked all the oil lines and remote tank for leaks and they are all clean, with the exception of one of the caps on the remote tank, which appears to have a slight drip on it. Nothing leaking into bilge and outside of tank is clean as well. Any ideas outside of bringing it to a dealer to hook up to computer to see what is wrong? Thanks for any help in advance.

playing with the throttle can put it back into "break-in mode" which will use more oil

That motor should be pumping oil to each cylinder and the compressor. On the V6 motors, there is an oil manifold on the front starboard side of the motor. The compressor oil is returned to the powerhead and burned. I would trace all oil lines and see if you can find a leak.
