Optimax 135

I just bought a new boat with a mercury Optimax 135. When I picked up my boat they said to use a motor flusher to flush the engine after every use. When I looked at the Mercury manual is tells you to hook a garden hose to a fitting on the powerhead and it says you can do it with or with out the motor running. Whats the difference between the two methods and what is the propper method. Thanks

I would not start the engine, TOB.<br /><br />Running the engine operates the water pump. If the flushing water isn't going through the pump it will burn the impeller up pretty quick.
