Re: optimax starting problem

Insert an in-line spark tester into the spark plug lead for a cylinder. Verify there is spark. Test all cylinder with this method.

Re: optimax starting problem

three things: #1 the e.c.u needs 9 +- volts when cranking or it will start and then stall. #2 your air rail presure may read o.k-cranking because of cylinder compretion presurizing the air rail the first cuple revolutions but the air pump may not provide the air neede to keep running. try using "shop air/compressed air" at air pump inlet (80 psi max) as you crank motor. if the motor starts and runs chk. the air pump reed block. #3 if the spark plugs are older than 2-3 hundred hr. replace with new "iz" spark plugs if using the older "pz" plugs. good luck!

Re: optimax starting problem

I'm back -first I used a digital multimeter on battery and when cranking it only dropped to 11volts.So I tried shop air on the air rail and same thing.I had already installed new NGK plugs before I posted my first question.I also did a compression test 120 psi all cylinders. If anybody has any other checks it would be greatly appreciated. It has me stumped::confused:

Re: optimax starting problem

SORRY MY TIPS DID NOT HELP! i will try listing some other things that may help. #1 good quality fuel??? try fresh gas from a 3 or 6 gal. portable tank, and flush the system at fuel rail pressure fitting as you cycle the key switch and pump the primer ball, keeping the vapor seperator full. spin-off the fuel filter and dump in glass jar to chk. quality. #2 are you loosing spark??? use a timing light to monitor ignition. #3 can you keep the motor running if you advance the throtle? monitor air rail pressure #4 the spark plugs must be one of two: NGK-IZFR5G= new recomendation
NGK-PZFR5F-11= old plug
did the motor run o.k till you put in new spark plugs? (sorry to ask, but this has happend in the past) #5 chk. for fuel in the air rail. (possible blown tracker valve diaphram) #6 any codes? (need merc. software or ddt)#7 try an other key switch and wire harnes assembly. (there could be continuity between the blk.-yellow wire and any other wire in the harness or the motor is not geting clean voltage from the "key-on" circit on the purple wire. also chk. the fuses. sorry if you already did the basics i listed. good luck!

Re: optimax starting problem

Its me again but I have good news-It ended up being the ignition switch. After all the good ideas blackbox had I checked everyone of them. The switch in the run position I did not have power to the purple wire. Which as you know powers everything. I want to again thank Blackbox and everyone that gave me any input in the bringing to life my OPTI. THANKS AGAIN THIS IS A WONERFUL SITE WITH GREAT PEOPLE!!!:)
