I will be buying a Nitro nx 882 Bass Boat and can power it with a 150 optimax or 175 efi and was told the performance would be the same, which is the better choice

Re: optimax vs efi

I would think that performance would be a little better with the 175HP. That extra 25HP has to mean something. I imagine the 150HP opti would give much better fuel economy than the 175HP EFI.The 150 opti is probably more expensive than the bigger EFI engine. I have no first hand knowledge on optis other than what I've read on this and other boards but what I have heard makes me leery of buying an opti.
I'm going to the Ft Lauderdale boat show tomorrow and what I'd like to buy is a new 175HP motor. I sure don't need one, and I'm having a hard time justifying (even to myself) the expense of a new motor for a boat I don't use nearly enough. My current boat is a 99 20'CC powered by a 96 115HP engine(always need more HP :D ) that just went over 400hrs (should be plenty of hours left). I'm thinking of a 175opti or 175EFI. The EFI is a proven engine but old technology. The opti like I said earlier - well it scares me with the problems they have had. I'm really impressed with what I've read on the new Evinrudes. It makes rerigging a lot more expensive though when you change brands. :(

Re: optimax vs efi

G,day. The Opti motor is more expensive than the EFI but will be much better on fuel, It would probebly take a while to justify the cost of the optimax motor. Service costs would be slightly higher too.
Aa far as performance I think that the 175 EFI would perform better than the Optimax 150 but the 150 Opti would outperform any carby motor up to 175HP.
Mike, I am surprised by your referance to problems with optimax motors, I think that the Evinrude that gets your vote has had far more problems than Merc.
For my money if I could afford it I would get the Optimax.

MikeF,

Go buy that new engine-400 hours! Most engines don't get 400 in their lifetimes.

You obviously have a "good one" to sell. If it made 400, it will make 1000-easy.

Re: optimax vs efi

If the horsepower was equal,I would go with the optimax but since they aren't I would choose the 175 for power and speed reasons only. With that size boat, the speed difference may be minimal but the ability to carry a heavier load without a loss of speed may be more significant.

Mike F,
I gotta echo Whaleys comments, I would reccomend an Opti over a Ficht. In my opinion Ficht hasn't established a long enough trouble-free history yet. Keep in mind that opinions on this board are only opinions. Everyone brings their own biases and life experience with them - just like Chevy and Ford.

jrsi812
If top end speed is your only concern, go with the 175. If you are looking for reliability and fuel economy, go with the 150. Maintenance is no higher on the Optimax's, just different. For most of the major repairs, you will have to take it to a dealer, but with the scan tools it eliminates a lot of guesswork, so diagnosis is pretty straight forward. The important thing is to use your boat. Letting it sit causes the most damage. If you don't have a lot of time, then I recommend getting something that you can fix yourself, because by not using it, your boat will always be broken down when you want it. It doesn't matter what brand/model. If it sits more than it runs, get something easy and inexpensive to repair - because you will have to - often. Just my $.02
