Optimum tuning for kicker 2 strokes?

My new to me 8hp Evinrude kicker gets a lot of exhaust spooge. I ran it for 10 hours last weekend trolling just above idle. It ran beautifully without so much as a hiccup but it had a great deal of white-grey spooge oozing out of the exhaust. The plugs were very wet and slightly oily.

I rebuilt the carb and I’m wondering if I should tweak the fuel mixture screw. I used the factory setting. I don’t want to lean it out too much for fear of damage. And there’s no water intrusion in the gear case.

when I rev the motor at the dock to run the carb out, I get a fireworks burst of that crud spewing out at the prop exhaust port.

I’d like to minimize this until I can afford a 4 stroke. Will tuning or hotter plugs burn this stuff better? Could I have thermostat issues?

thanks in advance

I do not believe you can damage a motor at idle from being ----TOO LEAN-----That is a full throttle / high load thing.----Yes check the thermostat.-----The factory idle setting is to start the motor and it keeps running.-----Once motor is running and warmed up you MUST make further adjustments !

A different two stroke oil may make a difference and maybe not.

What oil/fuel ratio are you running? What do you mean by "factory settings"?

After you're done trolling for the day or moving to a new spot, use the kicker at WOT to clean her out. Part of the way back, anyway.

BTW - At the end of the day just let the kicker idle to empty the carb. High revving could ventilate a piston as the mixture leans out.

adjust the LS carb setting between to lean and to rich is the usual setting

HS setting is likely fixed by the hs jet anyway

burn bio degradable oils if you worry about the goo

xd-100 is expensive but you won't burn that much

you motor seems fine lots of folks would like all-day troller with no hickups :)

as suggested give it a good shot of wot on the way back and use suggested plugs for your motor year and model

Thanks guys, I used 1-1/2 turns open plus a tweak or two after warm up to get running nicely. No HS needle on this carb. 50:1 ratio, Amzoil Synthetic.

bio oil makes me nervous . The stuff I’ve found is thick, doesn’t mix well and is not coloured. Gas looks straight. I’ve heard some say I’m risking my motor with it.

Revving at dock, I don’t over rev, and as soon as I detect it starting to lean out, I return it to idle.

and I’m sure not complaining. It’s a sweet and quiet motor! I’m just trying to clean it up if I can

I had the same issues with a 1984 Evinrude 9.9 that was usually used for 6-8 hours of trolling.. I ran it for several years, making adjustments and such with no improvement. Then, I was in Waukegan on a business trip (the 'Rude home office and R&D center) and happened to meet one of their Engineers and got some advice from him.

Bottom line - I switched to Split Fire Plugs (the exact replacement part no.) and the problem basically disappeared. Never had a problem for the next 30 years.

At one point I tried full synthetic and that provided no advantage. The best oil I ever used was XD-50. The motor was not oil injected, it was pre-mixed.

Of course, first and foremost, you need to run a "sailboat" prop for that service. That is the lowest pitch available for the particular motor.
