I need to make a bracket similar to this for my swim platform.

Based on a mock-up I did I need to use a piece that is 8" wide with a bend 2" from the top at the same angle as in this bracket. If I did it that way, it would mount directly to the bottom of the swim platform.

Anyone that has priced stainless plate lately knows that 2 pieces of 8x24 stainless 1/4" thick will cost you a couple hundred. I was given 2 pieces 6X18 and I would like to try to make them work.

I could make the same bend and use a spacer to bring the horizontal to the right level or I could make the bend opposite so the tab is verticle and then I could bolt or weld or an "L" bracket on to bring it back horizontal. My 3rd option is to just have a 2" piece of stainless welded to this piece at the correct angle then I need no spacers, no "L" brackets, etc.

Is a bend significantly stronger or weaker than a weld?

IMHO take it to a person that does welding for a living and ask their thoughts. They usually will give you a quote for free and you also will have the work certified in case it breaks.

Ayuh,... Personally, I'd weld it, as bending 1/4" stainless will need a Big pressbrake...

Stainless welds quite easily, with the right rods...
