I have a 1983 Wellcraft 196 Sunhatch with a MCM228R engine and "R" sterndrive. After 4 years
I finally have it on the water and noticed my speedometer does not work. If
I blow compressed air into sensor opening the guage will go to 45mph but on the water it doesn't move I thought these sensors worked by forcing water into the tube - compressing the air in the tube and converting the air pressure reading into mph. When
I look at how my sensor is mounted on the boat the opening is perpendicular to the water flow which seems to me to result in reduced air pressure in the tube rather than increased pressure in the tube. I'm wondering if I should re-orient the pick-up so the hole is facing into the water flow rather than perpendicular to the water flow? I have posted a picture of my set-up.

You need a new speedo pitot. The probe is missing or broken off.

restoration is awsome... keep in mind if you want accuracy with speed, get a gps...

Thanks for the responses. When looking more carefully at the sensor I could see where the piece was broken off.
