I am hunting online to try to learn the original color of 1947 Firestone 7.5 hp engine..I just got one and got it running really well but its double butt ugly, somebody slathered silver paint over the entire outboard, I dont think I have the will to take it to the lake till I shoot some good color on it and stick some decals on it....Anybody have one with original paint, whats it look like?
.
'nuther question-- Whats the shear pin made of?? .The old one was sheared, its low carbon steel , measures .150 by .875 ...I replaced it with one that is brass, was with a 3.5 hp Firestone I bought earlier.. I am thinking brass is appropriate for the smaller engine but steel shearpins would be right for the larger Firestone.??? ..
Thanks

I would say the pin is probably brass. I have a 1947 Firestone as well but it really needs a better tank before I would do anything else to it, is you 3.5 a parts motor :D Here is a photo of mine, the paint is kind of a gold color.

Here you can see the state of the tank a little better

Ohm, yours is indeed gold colored. Thankyou thats what I will paint my 1947 7.5hp......My other Firestone, the 1948 3.5hp is sorta family heirloom ,I've had it 40 years. Its tank is dented up nearly as bad as yours but its been like that as long as I can remember and doesnt detract from my sentimental feelings for that old engine...I dont guess I will ever part with it....
.
Thanks

Here ya go..an unmolested 1947 Firestone model 477, code 133-7-477, stock # 10-A-2 in original paint with original decal on the front. Clearly, it is dull aluminum color.

EDIT: the brown stuff on the tank is rust.

Re: orig Color of 47 Firestone

FR there was some evidence of possibly original aluminum colored paint on mine . I particularly like to see the front end of yours that shows the red colored Firestone..When I was sanding down through the layers I found a couple red letters remaining from "Stop" and "Fast", had me wondering how it was supposed to be decal-ed....On yours is there any graphics on the sides or all the lettering is on the front only?
Thanks..

See mine..I thought I read that in 1947 Firestone only produced a 3.5hp and a 7.5hp...Mine shown is the 7.5hp , what is that one of yours? I see that the lower cowling on mine extends substantially lower than yours...Is yours a 3.5hp?................................I also have a 1948 3.5hp Firestone that has sheetmetal miniskirt , not cast aluminum lower cowling..

Yes, mine is a 3.5. Congratulations, it is rare to find them with the lower cowling still in place.

Since I took the pictures this morning, I have removed the tank to clean the rust out of the inside. But here is a close-up. I had to distort the colors to get the decal to show up in the picture. Anyhoo, in the original views the speed control is at the start position. Slow is about an equal amount left of center. Fast all the way to the right and Stop all the way to the left. There are no side decals.

I wonder if mine is a Scott then as I think they had the later ones painted green and gold, I was just guessing that it was a firestone. I'm still not sure what I am going to do with it, still contemplating parting it out as it is so hard to find parts for.

Probably is a Scott-Atwater.

Here I have now finished painted the 1947 Firestone. I made the waterslide decals, goofed a bit , should have moved the word 'start' a half inch to the right but it looks good to me..

Hey, that looks great, nice work on the decal, where did you get the artwork for it, I have the stuff to make water slide decals but finding the artwork to print has not been easy, I want to make some for my 5 hp Gale when I get the other tank fitted and a fresh coat of paint on it.

Artwork....borrow what you can find, where you can find it.This exact particular decal isnt available from anybody that I know....For font I took the picture from
http://www.americanoutboard.com/index.html

http://www.americanoutboard.com/decals/firestone/Firestone_side_l.gif

and brought the picture into Microsoft paintbrush where I painted white over everything I didnt need, then added the red line and the words Stop, slow, start and fast....simple ,simple......
