Guys and Gals, HELP... My poor old hands are about as painfully dry as they have ever been... I mean cracking open... :(

I encounter some fairly nasty stuff at work like 3M 5200, oil/grease, old nasty green coroded wires, and just plain old dirt to name a few, therefore I must wash my hands frequently to keep nasty finger prints off the fine finishs of many of the yachts that I service...

I do wear light gloves when I can, but as most of you know you can't handle small things like screws, nuts, and bolts very well with gloves on...

I've been using hand lotion (can't remember name) about three time a day and it helps a little but it does'nt seem to "keep up" with me..

Anybody got any suggestions, home remedies, I'll try ANYTHING!!!...(well, almost anything) :p

I use Cornhuskers lotion. It's in a yellow/clear bottle. This stuff is great. Dries quick too.

There are a few others, but I can't remember the names. One is in a white tube, 'barrier lotion' ?

There's a bunch of over-the-counter remedies.
Trial and error I guess.

H.

The only lotion that works for me is "Curel." Not greasy either.

I know quite a few people that use udder balm. Its more of an ointment though.

You should try using a "barrier cream." It goes on your hands and seals them from the chemicals, so they don't actually touch your skin. It makes washing up a lot easier too, as the grime hasn't soaked into your skin.

Then use the Curel when done working.

Hummmm! Cornhuskers and a barier cream sounds like the way to go... I'll give it a try...

I especially like the "no perfume smell" part... Stuff I been using smells goofy, like something a man ain't suppose to smell like, ya know?...

I'm off to the drugstore first thing in the a.m.

My hands say thanks to all.. :)

Snapperbait,

I agree on the Cornhuskers.

When my hands are real bad, I'll put a good amount on just before bed and put socks over my hands.

By morning they are nice and soft and the splits begin to heal.

Corn huskers is pretty good for daily use, I use band aids with vaseline on cracks at joints and such.
sometimes when my hands are very dry right before I go to bed I will cover my hands with vaseline and put on a pair of white linen gloves all night this works great but is a little bit of a hassle.

Snapperbait,

Not to sound like Bill Clinton, but I FEEL YOUR PAIN! Working with acid, acetone, degreasers, resin, oven cleaners, and a few other harsh chemicals my hands look like the paws of an alligator.

I have used Cornhushers with good results. But I have been using the GOLD BOND body lotion. It seems to help relieve the pain of the open wounds from the cracks and makes my tough skin a little more flexible.

At night my wife takes a vitamin E gel capsule and pokes a hole in it an puts it right on the major cracks and then bandages them up. That seems to help the healing of the wounds.

When I was working alot with epoxy paint and using alot of acetone, my hands had got so bad I had to go to the doctor. His sermon to me was to keep my hands out of harsh chemicals. I ended up using a product called FRESH START. It is a product that you put on your hands before you start working with chemicals. Since I was into the stuff so much, I would put two applications on letting each one dry out. I couldn't believe how well it protected my hands from the chemicals. Plus washing off the epoxy paint that would get on my hands would wash right off with soap and water :D . I don't know where to get that product now, but there are others out there. It is like a protective covering for your skin that is inpervious to chemicals, but comes off easy with soap and water.

The doctor suggested this to me, your body will heal, but prevention of the cause is your best medicine.

Hope you get your hands healed up.......SS

I suffer from the cracked, ground-in grease hands, too. What's worked for me is to rub in some "liquid glove" type lotion before starting a greasy job. You have to give it time to dry before starting or your fingers will slip on the nut or whatever. It also makes it a lot easier to clean your hands after the job, too.

http://www.nocrack.com/

Cornhuskers is good but this stuff is great.

I give up the dishwashing machine when mine get
really bad and wash the dishes by hand in the sink for a couple of days. It helps a lot and helps to loosen that "permanent dirt" that I seem to get deep in my fingerprints as well!

This really does work. Vaseline even makes the overnight gloves now.

There is a hand cream that my dermatologist prescribes called Lac-Hydrin. It is great stuff, but expensive if you don't have prescription drug coverage on your medical plan.
