We just bought a 1998 Fisher 200DLX. Our first trip out was last weekend on Sunday and we had a nice day. On Friday, I took it out with the girls and it was the day from hell. During transit, my seat cushion cover thing that covers the engine fell off. It ripped it straight out of the frame and left the screws and metal piece but that was it. So today we take it out, are having a great time and it will not start. Yeah, they say the starter is bad. Is the starter replacement as easy as it looks? Are there other things that you have to do? Is it like doing it on a car? How do you go about finding a starter? Anyone know where to start?

Most starters are an easy replacement. After disconnecting the battery and removing the wiring from the starter, usually only 2 or 3 bolts hold it on. The engine brand and HP would narrow the procedure down.

They say the starter is bad, who is they? After you check your battery and the wiring. The starter should be easy to change most of them are. Just make sure you disconnect your battery cables while changing it out.
good luck.

not enough info, this is a motor question, and should be posted in the correct motor forum.

I am not sure what the motor is. I know it is a 1998 75HP motor but I do not know the brand because it was bought out by someone else, I have heard them say. Mercury or Mariner, whichever was bought out?

As to being in the wrong forum, I apologize because I would not have guessed the starter to even be part of the engine. If that shows you just how much I know about cars/boats.

Starters are easy to change but kinda pricey. Other parts such as the starter relay, connections, switch, and battery can cause the same symptoms. Have a competent mechanic diagnose the problem before changing the starter.

Your title/registration should have this information (at least it does in Texas).

TD is right. You need to have this moved to the outboard forum. You're much more likely to get the help you need there. Based on what you've said it sounds like the Mercury section is where your question belongs, but a look at the motor and/or manual should tell you for sure. Incidentally, I believe the thing you're referring to that fell apart and went bye bye is the sun deck. It sounds like you still have the frame, so assuming it's still usable you can have a new sun deck made and installed at an upholstery shop. You don't mention your location, but around here that job runs around $300. Don't want to sound haughty, but it seems you need to take some steps to educate yourself. There's a wealth of info on line about your model boat and motor. Also, have you considered a boating safety course? Sounds like you could really benefit from some education. Just a thought. Welcome to iboats.

QUOTE" it will not start"UNQUOTE
Could it be that the "dead man" lanyard has been pulled and this will not allow the motor to be started???????

When this issue is resolved post back with the cures.

Re: Our boat will not turn over.

The original thread title indicated the starter would not turn over although that was not stated in the body of the thread.

The kill switch will not stop the motor from turning over. It only prevents the engine from starting.

Re: Our boat will not turn over.

I recently replaced my starter solinoid to solve this issue. I'd turn the key and get nothing. Get a test light and have someone hold it up to the starter solinoid, if it lights up when you turn the key, the solinoid is bad. If you don't get it to light up, it could be the neutral safety switch is bad or the shifter isn't in neutral.

Starter solinoids are much cheaper than the starter itself :D

You can also "jump" or bypass the starter solinoid with a pair of insulated pliers. We had to do this to get back to the dock this year. I'm glad I knew how to do it!!

Re: Our boat will not turn over.

I don't understand why you don't what motor this is. What does it say on the cover of the engine. What does it say on the serial number plate on the engine. All you need to do is look. There are lots of things to look at before you spend money on a starter that I'll bet you don't need. You haven't even given us a symptom what won't turn over means. Do you get a click, a whirr, a buzz? Or do you get dead silence when you turn the key? Did you jiggle the throttle/shift lever on the controls. Just like your car, the starter will not energize if the engine is not in neutral.

Re: Our boat will not turn over.

I am going to move this to Mercury/Mariner. Let me know if it turns out to be something else . . . :)

Oh, and I can't help it. Every time I see a "my boat won't turn over" thread I want to answer . . . Good . . . :D

I would check the starter solenoid too, in fact I would check the fuse on the starter solenoid. then if the fuse was okay I would check the battery.
