I am looking at a sunseeker sportsfisher that has 3 yamaha outboards. Question: Is the outboard better for fishing than diesel inboards?

Ladiesservice get off your high horse and join the rest of the world. These forums are international and the rest of us don't need ethnocentric ethnic bashing of other peoples or their products by narrow minded short sighted Americans. It is a similar arrogant attitude which has led, I believe in part, to the current state of declining sales not only for American outboards but American automobiles. Keep your political opinions to the op-ed page of your local newspaper, they have no place here.

Signed
Another American

Way too many variables here.

If you could specify the size of boat, where and how it will be used, distance from coast, type if fishing, captained of self piloted, your previous boating experiences, where boat will be kept - moored or lifted out or trailered; then someone will be able to offer their opinions and recommendations.

As for handling, it depends on what youre looking for. Do you mean tight turns, easier steering, better backing, manuvering in tigh places or what?

The advantage of outboards, among other things, is draft, weight etc. Plus if you like the boat years from now you can easily install different motors.

What size are the outboards? What HP Diesels?

Outboards allow more cockpit space, burn more fuel, are easily replaced and weigh less.

The boats is a Sunseeker sportsfisheer 37. I am used to a a Tiara 3500 with inboard cummings. While I am assured that the 37 foot Sunseeker will handle better with 3 outboards, I have my doubts. the boat will be stored on a lift.

Re: Out board vrs inboard

Alright, alright.. I guess there is a reason I have the label "Cadet". Let me start over..

I own a Tiara 3500 express with two 370 comming diesel that I am going to trade it in for a new boat.

The Tiara is not real good for fishing, but is a very nice boat. I have narrowed the new boat field down to a 35' Cabo with two 455 cats. Nice boat, but not as nice as the Tiara. The other boat left in the running is a 37' Sunseeker Sportsfisher. It is ever bit as nice as the Tiara. It has a bow thruster and three 225hp 4 cycle Yahamas. On its sea trial I did not find the 3 outboards as responsive as I like. (compared to the Tiara). I was assured by the boat salesman that in the long run the outboards would out perform the inboards. While I have doubt about this I was looking for someone with experience to offer some advise.

I liked the Cabo, it just was not as nice as the Sunseeker. Has anyone had the opportunity to work with both the inboard and outboards in a boat along this size?

Thank you

Just how does the salesman say the ob will out perform the inboards?

CATs will be there after the Yamahas are dead and recycled. CAT compared to Yamaha is like comparing Rolls Royce with Yugo. About the only time you see triple outboards on 37' boats is Cigarette types with 2 strokes...speed is the word. Few to any run 4 strokes for speed.

Re: Out board vrs inboard

wow
what a salesman. was he smiling when he said that? I am working on a 33 grady with every bell and whistle ever offered and a fly bridge with full curtains. the pair of F225's on the back just are not enough. the boat is a mutt with a top speed of 34 MPH at 5800 rpm burning 38.8 gallons an hour. you will find for any offshore work a well laid out and maintained freshwater cooled inboard will go a lot longer with less trouble than the average outboard.
in my opinion a 37 ft boat with outboards for anything other than strictly go fast is ludicrous.

Torque, can't beat a cat diesel for torque, allows you to spin a massive screw (unlike an outboard). VERY expensive to repair but would need repairing rarely. Very economical, cheap to run.

Did I mention torque.

Aldo

SWT,
Since you own a Tiara and like it have you checked out the new Pursuits? I think Pursuit was Tiara before the name change. Their factory is across the state from you in Ft.Pierce.

Bill P.

Re: Out board vrs inboard

No way I would even think of outboards -vs- diesels if I had the kind of money to lay down on a rig like that. Would be diesels all the way. When was the last time you saw a gas powered big rig going down the road. Reason is the power the diesels ahave all through the band. Besides the fact they last for EVER.

Big benifits as I see it for diesels.
1. Torque
2. Fuel economy
3. Resale value
4. Service life

Now benifits for outboards (and I am even a proud soon to be Yamaha 200 HDPI owner if they ever get my boat built).
1. None

As to the handling and responsiveness. The torque you feel from the diesel will never be duplicated from the outboards. They may wind up being just as quick but will not feel like they accelerate as quick, seat of the pants wise. Properly pitched they will equal each other on the top end, but a diesel will put it on plane quicker due to the low end grunt. Handling. Twin screw inboards will all ways out manuever a outboard slow speed. Nothing like being able to turn it around in less than two boat lengths with no bow thruster.
