I am trying to align my motor to the outdrive with the alignment tool.My problem seems to be side to side alignment not up and down.Is there a way to adjust for side to side alignment?
My motor is 4.3L V-6 and outdrive mercruiser alpha 1
Pleaase help as I was hoping to get this back together today.
Thanks, Leo

Re: Out drive alignment HELP!

There is no side to side adjustment. You have the two motor mounts in the rear that do not move. The two in the front our for up and down only. You might check and see if someone has one of the mounts in the front higher than the other one. From what I have read this can cause a side to side issue. That is what happened on mine when I bought it. Someone had tried adjusting the motor mounts and got the engine off balance on the mounts. You also might need to adjust the gimbal bearing. To do this you insert the alignment bar in till you reach the coupler. Hit it with a hammer on top, bottom, right, and left. This is how I was told to align my new gimbal bearing up to the coupler. Rotted stringers where the motor mounts are at can also cause issues.

Re: Out drive alignment HELP!

Thanks Baca but after removing the bolt through the mount that goes into the stringers there does look to be a slotted hole that would give me a 1/4 inch or so of side to side movement.Someone at some point has got these turned around or reversed as the manual shows them at the forward position and mine are at the rear position.I am in the process of switching them around and hopefully this will help.If you are correct then I still wont have any movement side to side and I will be checking the motor mounts to make sure they are aligned to each other.Thankyou for your help and any other suggestion you or others may have on this.It is greatly appreciated:p
