hello I am in the process of changing my sea water pump.
The problem I am having is on of the bolts is being very stubborn it is starting to round out. and it one of the ones on the side yes the tough ones to get to.
I sprayed it down with PB Blast gonna wait over night to get back at it.
I may have to chisel a notch to get it off. any one else had this experience? and what did you do to get it off? Heat?I cant get a nut cracker in there. Im using 5/8 wrench
gonna try a16mm next before I take a chisel to it.thanks guys.

Hi there, what model/year drive are you working on?

Also could you post a photo of the area you are working on to help give us a visual.

You must have a saltwater boat?:)

thanks its a 87 Wellcraft bow rider
with a 165 mercruser outdrive alpha one type r/mr
yes it is a salt water boat I recently bought it about three weeks ago the previous owner was not mechanically inclined.
I asked if the water pump had been changed he didnt know he owned the boat about a year, had some issue with over heating so i'm going at the water pump first.
it has closed cooling system at idle it stays around 180 deg and when I tach it up to 2000 rpm the temp comes up but not above 200 deg (on the on board gauge)it looked like the tstat opened as temp went down after running awhile.so on the hose it didnt get hot.
but my problem is the nut on the side of the lower unit you know there are two one on each side that are the tough ones to get at.one loosened up fine the other looked like it had been messed with.

When I used to workm on these things, I had a similar experience. I found a chisel about 6 inches long and 1/4" blade. I was able to place it on the side of the nut VERY CAREFULLY AND TAP THE NUT counter clockwise just to get it to move a hair. I actually made a small crease in the stainless nut with the chisel. If you can get it to move at all , you will be able to get it off with the wrench.

Make sure you are using a 6 point socket or wrench. My tools are Craftsman. The 6 point sockets don't touch the corners only the flats.

Ayuh,.... BD is Right, those are Nuts, on Studs, not bolts at all,....

High Heat, Quickly, then a cold water quench might break the nut free, without meltin' the castin',..... O/ac touch type quick heat,...

I misunderstood. I was thinking the nuts to remove the drive from the bellhousing. The PB blaster should help. Use a good quality wrench that won't flex.

Put the control in forward at the helm. Put the drive in forward by turning the bronze shift "foot" so it's facing straight ahead.
While you hold the foot straight turn the prop shaft counter clockwise til it stops. It will stay with the shoe facing the right way if you put a bungee on the prop and hold it CCW, It's not essential to bungee it, but it can help if you are fumbling around a bit. Once you have installed the drive a few times it gets easier.
Also check that the big square cut rubber seal hasn't got out of place and messed up your install.
You don't want grease on the tip of the shaft where it enters the drive coupling, that can create an air pocket that resists the install. But you do want grease on the splines.
You could also go watch Chris's video.http://youtu.be/aGVrY4cWiDA
