I have a 78 model ebbtide that has a rattle in the out drive when you turn either way hard. I was told about a gear or something that is worn out. I also am looking for any type of manual that you could recommend to help me replace this part. the boat is a 78 model ebbtide with a 140 inboard and mercruiser outdrive.

It would really help if we knew what kind of engine/outdrive you had!

Sounds like bad CV joints ( universal for those that prefer), but could also be a gimbal bearing. I'm not sure on the particular symptoms of each one and I'm sure someone will be along shortly with a good diagnosis. If you are mechanically inclined, you could pull the outdrive and check the CV joints for excessive play. Also while its off, you could check the gimbal bearing in the transom. Those are the only two things I can really think of, that would cause that kind of problem.
