I'm tuning up my neighbors 1988 Johnson 70 HP outboard and he gave me the Clymer manual to use. Problem is the manual covers 1973 to 1987 motors. Seems to be a year short. Basically I want to do a link and sync on it. Does anyone think it would be OK to use the 1987 for this process?

Thanks All
Chas

Re: Out of date info

my clymer covers 73' to 1990 and it does not seperate the years for a 70hp. i would assume by this that the instructions you have should cover your engine.

Re: Out of date info

Lastout
I did a timing pointer alignment and it was within 1/2 deg. Adjusted the throttle cam follower and checked the pickup timing and it's sitting at 10-12 deg ATDC, which is a lot. The Clymer manual calls for 4 deg ATDC for 1987 and on, but is TDC for all years prior to that. With only that one year being different and such a big discrepancy to start, it makes me nervous.
Chas

Re: Out of date info

my manual says for a 1988 70hp that full throttle spark advance should be 19 +/-1 BTDC and pick up throttle should be 1 +/-1 ATDC. now you know what clymer knows, good luck.
