I have a 45hp Merc and I can't get it to turn over and run. I have replaced the plugs, put in a new battery, and it has new gas. I get it to crank and it attempts to start, but no dice.

Have you tried spraying a gas oil mix straight into the carb. Did this motor run for you before? Are you using the choke?

Re: out of ideas

Evidently the fuel line inlet tip on the motor was stuck. It would let just enough gas in to try to crank, but not enough to run.

Another question though. One of the wires that runs for the left side of the motor to the top that goes under the cranking gear is corroded. How hard is that to replace? I know I have to take off the crank wheel to get to one end, but how much else am I going to have to do? Any idea what size socket will take off that wheel? Its bigger than a 3/4, which of course is the largest I have.

hello
about the best advice I can give you is buy the service manual and learn the correct terminology for the part your trying to describe.the flywheel nut is 15/16ths but it also takes a special puller to remove the flywheel. you can mess it up without it. but serious please try to use the exploded views to properly ID the parts in question. it helps us all. use the standard port and stbd that way we always know what side your refering too.
good luck and keep posting

Try "Outboard wont start" in the Engine FAQ. It will get you to what system is bad.

Good luck. :)
