I hane painted my outboard and purchased decals on ebay. Perhaps the decals are old but they are not sticking very well. The surface was well prepared but they are peeling off. They were hard to find so that I need to make sure they stick and do not fly off as they were trying to do yesterday while out on my boat. Any suggestions on what type of glue would be best used to make them stick.? Should I spray a clearcoat on them afterward to help them out? Appreciate your suggestions.

that might help, or if the will come completely off, mask the area they are going, and use spray contact cement, but you only get one chance with that.

How cold was it out there in Vista? Try heating the decals with a hair dryer to make the glue stickier.

What kind of decals? Waterslide, applique vinyl, original laquer applied? Each is applied differently, but a good clear coat same brand as your color coat is recommended to keep them in place and afford some protection, too. Some folks even use UV resistant clear coat so they won't yellow over time.

Decals were OEM vinyl. Tried the blow dryer not sure of the results yet. Will clear coat ASAP. Thanks for the replies.

I agree with clear coating. Then you have nothing to worry about again, will last a long time. Adds shine and looks cool. Good Luck!

I recently ordered new decals for two outboards and would like some advise before I run into the same problem with them not sticking. What type of clear coat would be best and where is the best place to buy clear coat?

I've used OEM stickers and never had a problem, they stick very well.

Don't clearcoat over the vinyl decals. It messes them up and will take the ink off of them. Learned by experience yesterday. They are not ruined but they started to wrinkle. Had I put more paint on them they would be history. Use a heat gun on a warm day. Make sure the surface is smooth and clean. Mine were purchased on eBay. Looked for them for about 7 months finally found them and only paid $25.00. Good luck.
