Outboard getting wet too high up?

The bonnets are intended to keep water off the engine, Zoom. They expect to get wet.<br /><br />Good luck.

Outboard getting wet too high up?

I was out in the Chesapeake for the first time with my new 18' center console and concerned that the cover of the 90hp Yamaha was getting too wet. I had about 80% of the max weight capacity and I was getting nervous about how close the water was spraying up on the motor near the lid gasket. <br /><br />Should I be concerned?

If you have water spraying up on to the cowling either the motor is too low (AV plate under water and spraying it up) or there is something on the transom not mounted correctly. Like a transducer or speedo tube.

The big beware on this is to make sure that no water is getting into the opening for air to get into the carb. That would result in water ingestion into the engine which can be fatal or very expensive.

Off shore with a following sea I seen my little 15HP kicker go completely under the water and does not miss a stroke then as wave passes under the boat the prop on the 20 inch shaft comes out of the water and throw water on my rear starboard guest. This happends often when useing the kicker to slow our drift. Only thing here is must not go above a fast idle or when the prop drops back in the water can break the flywheel key and the motor stops until repaired.
