im a big outboard guy, thats all i own and work on. a friend has a 1997 regal 201 with a v8 i/o volvo penta. its been sitting for 3 years, they want me to resurect it.

i was planning on pulling all plugs, checking to see if its locked up, maybe shoot some oil in plug holes and rotate slightly if i can. check all belts and hoses. check for spark, check compression.

what do i look for on the outdrive side of things? i have never even been in a boat that was propelled by these discusting beasts :p

i know, i know, outboards are stupid and stinky, but thats all i know.

help me now, hate me later :)

I would recommend getting the engine running (make sure is going to be ok). If the engine is ok, then pull the drive, drain and replace gear lube, check all rubber boots and hoses, (replace as necessary or over 5 yrs old) check gimble bearing, and engine alignment.

Ya, but before you turn the engine over you should pull the distributor and prime up the oil with a priming tool and drill. All the oil passages will be dry after sitting that long.

Yes they have repair manuals.

Is this a Volvo Penta SX drive?

There is also a recent post or two on removing a Volvo drive. Don S and Rodbolt are the resident Volvo gurus.

Mike, it is different, but as you will see when you get into it, not overwhelming for a guy like you. You'll also need an alignment tool for reinstalling the drive.

A factory manual is the way to go.
