outboard ID and oil mix question--odd label

I'm looking at a garage sale outboard, Johnson, no HP marks but the model # is J8RC06, so I am thinking it's an eight.

It looks like a 1970's-1980's motor; it's all white. But it does not have a kill switch, and it does have a a lean/rich knob, which suggests older. The labelling is by symbols (like for the choke) instead of words, although there is a muli-lingual label, which suggests newer.

Here's the oddest part: at the fuel lien hook-up, is a symbol for gas/symbol for oil, then "100/1" I didn't think any motors since about 1960 ran 100/1.

Thoughts?

Serial # is B101714. Cosmetically in great shape, and not deized up (although it's been sitting back-down). $350/OBO, which is a good price, except I don't need it! That 100/1 is odd to me.

That is a 1985 8HP, HC. The 100:1 mix recommendation was revoked in favor of 50:1 shortly afterward.

thanks JB I did some poking around after I posted (my bad) and found the same thing--the conventional wisdom is to disregard the 100:1 recommendation. Wonder why they tried it. I guess it confirms that worst case a lean mixture won't kill you.

I can't decide if I should buy this motor; it's pretty, it's cheap, reliable seller; I don't need it but he's moving cross country so I could do him a favor. You can always use a small motor. But i just pulled my 20 merc into the driveway to wrench on.

He also has a 13' fiberglass Genoe with a rotted transom, Florida registration, no title, I think I can get for $50. It would be deadly for the duck hunting I do and more stable than my 13' canoe (which scares my friends and family since I often go alone) and I can motor home. Don't know that I'd put the 8 on it though; probably a troller. But I have (club boats) a skinny 12' jon and a fat 14' with unreliable motors already, so my own 8 may be a good idea.

temptations to add to my varicose boats (broken vessels). I recall that I have 146' of boats, the biggest being 21'!

Wouldn't go more than 5hp with a 13' Gheenoe.

The 13' is only rated for a 5 hp and will plane and do about 13 mph.
15'4" gets you to 10 hp and 18 mph
15'6" goes to 25 hp and 35 mph
16 foot up to 40 hp and 38 mph
They are all pretty different hull designs and beam widths

my bad; I read HP as MPH. No coffee at the time.

I don't think I'd buy the 8 for the Genoe, either; I'm just tempted by both units individually. But well I know the "free boat" thing as well as the issue of no title (which isn't a problem if I don't put a motor on it).

The "no title" thing would worry me a bit, as Florida is a boat title state. Texas was not a boat title state when I moved here, but is now. My boat has a Fla title, but is only registered in TX. Guess I should change title it here someday, but I don't have to unless I sell it.
