Outboard in-line fuel filter?

Hello Group,

We are replacing the fuel cans on our 24' pontoon. It seems to us there should there be an in-line filter between the cans and motor, but we have not seen this on other pontoons. Does anyone recommend or not an in-line fuel filter. If yes, does it go before or after the hand pump bulb?

Many thanks in advance!

I think every outboard should have a fuel/water separator between the tank and the primer bulb, then an in-line screen type filter after the bulb (the outboard likely already has one of these under the cowling).

I added one to mine, primarily because the one on the motor is hard to get at.

Get the Walmart/Attwood fuel/water separator($27), mount it back near the motor somewhere you can unscrew it to dump it or change it. Leave the motor mounted filter in place as a back-up.

Robert, great advice. Is there a convienient way to do this with two tanks? (There is a tank on each side of the pontoon boat.) Would we need to wrench the lines on and off the mounted f/w seperator when switching tanks? Or, could we use a two line in and two line out fuel/water seperator?

Thanks!

What we are wondering about is how to connect a f/w separator to two fuel tanks. They make f/w separators with 2 inlets ans 2 outlets. We could connect two tanks to the 2 inlets, then block one outlet and hand prime to the motor from the other outlet.

Does this make sense?

Use quick disconnect couplings on the inlet side of the separator and on each end of the fuel lines from the tanks. Switch as necessary!
