Outboard install question.

Hi.
I am about to attempt to install a 60 hp outboard on my boat & had a couple questions.
When I took the nonrunning 50hp off it was only held on by the upper clamps, but looks like they had drilled holes in the transom for the two lower bolts. I want to re-use these holes (assuming they line up, which they should, merc off merc back on) so that I can install an anti-theft nut/bolt.
I have purchased a tube of life caulk from a recommendation. But how should I do it?
I know I should make sure the lower holes match, drill out the old sealant, etc.
Someone told me to fill the hole with sealant & the push the lower bolts through, smear it on the inside & outside, etc. But how do I get the bolt through without getting sealant all over it? The bolt with the antitheft lock has to be clean so I can apply thread lock.
Any tips on how to do this properly?

(also, when installing the throttle controls, the first cable to move is the throttle, yes? I'm checking my manual now)

OldTyme,

You're going to get some on the bolt, no matter what. You'll have to clean it.

By the way, I suggest 3M 5200 for that sealing job.

Hi,
Nuts on the outside side of the boat - that way You can loose the nuts without need to reseal the bolts if you need to take the outboard away in the future. Use two nuts per bolt and lock them against each other. I use Sikaflex 291 as seleant for the bolts.

Place motor, insert bolt halfway, fill with sealer from both sides, push bolt in. Atleast half of the bolt will be clean.

Re: Outboard install question.

You asked if the the throttle was the first cable to move. Think about it -- don't you need to be in forward or reverse first? So the answer is No. The throttle cable moves only after you've selected forward or reverse which is the first cable to move.
