My 40 Nissan 2-stroke is doin the funky chicken. While in the water, it will start in neutral and run really good at idle. When you put it in forward or reverse gear, it will run a short time and die. The more gas you give it, the faster it dies. When it dies it jerks the tiller handle preety good as if the lower unit or motor itself, momentarily, seizes up. When you run it out of the water, it runs fine in forward or reverse. It seems that it only runs like crap when there is a load on the motor. Any ideas guys?????
Thanks in advance.
LW

Howdy, Wader.

Your engine isn't getting enough fuel to carry a load.

What happens if you pump your primer bulb while this is going on?

If that keeps her running check the tank for restricted ventilation, restricted fuel pickup, lines, bulb and finally fuel pump failure.

Good luck. :)

Re: Outboard jerks and dies!

After each time it would die, I would check the bulb and it was firm as if it was pulling fuel from the tank to the motor. I'm starting to think maybe the carb jet has trash in it. The gas can and fuel line are original and came with the motor back in '89. May have sucked up some 14-year buildup sludge from the gas tank  Anywho, gonna break into her on sat.and see what's what. Just lookin to be pointed in the right direction before I do. Thanx for your response.
