I am getting ready to put a new outboard on a project boat i have been working on (1989 Critchfield Marine) what do i need to measure to know if a long or short outboard is better for my hull? (it did not have a motor when i bought it so i dont know what it originally was equipped with.

Re: Outboard Long or Short

What is the length of the boat, transom height, HP rating? What size outboard are you looking to put on there?

More info will help you get a good answer.:)

Measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the boat. Measure vertically because the transom isn't straight. Most motors come in 15" (short), 20" (long) and 25" extra long.

Transom measures 20" from where the motor bracket rests to bottom of boat. right now there is a 75hp but it is rated up to 115hp. i am looking for between 90hp and 115hp it will depend on what i find. i guess the answer is i need a "Long Shaft" correct? 20"? thanks

Re: Outboard Long or Short

Like Lion Hunter posted 20" is transom will require a long shaft. Any motor larger than 25-40hp is usually a long shaft but they can be changed out as needed by replacing the lower unit.

If you are looking for an outboard of that size you will find that they are all long shafts that will work for your setup.

How is the transom condition on the boat?

Any older wood that is dryrotting will need to be replaced if it is an older boat.

There are plenty of good threads on this site that will help you out if needed, I am planning to overhaul the transom on my boat in the next few weeks since I'm planning on buying a new to me outboard soon.
